Twyford set off from Tiverton on 21st
July for a tournament in the Italian Alps, on the way they stayed in Basle and
Erstfeld and had a wonderful trip on Lake Lucern. Before arriving at the
tournament on 24th the Club had a guided tour of the San Siro Stadium, Milan.
The Valtellina Cup Tournament took place in Morbegno. Our first
opponents were Calgary from Canada and emerged with a 5-0 win thanks to goals
by James Ware (2), Jordan Charran (2) and Andy Norman. In the afternoon
of the first day Twyford then entertained UK Elite from the USA and won by 12
- 0 with hat tricks from Michael Humphreys, James Ware, Andy Norman and Jordan
Charran. The second day in extreme heat Twyford played Canvey Island and
in an excellent game drew 0-0. The last day of the group matches Twyford
entertained FS Lipomo, Italy and won 1-0 with the winner being scored by Ollie
Bailey. This qualified Twyford for the final, the opponents were Canvey
Island.
Again both teams produced good football
and with Canvey Island leading 2-1 with minutes to go Twyford looked like
having to settle for 2nd place. Then Jordan Charran produced a
tremendous strike to send the match into extra time. Nathan Dale had
earlier equalised Canvey's first goal with a great header from an Andy Norman
corner. In extra time Twyford seemed to change up a gear and controlled
the match and James Ware scored the winner to the excitement of the big crowd
and gave Twyford the Valtellina Cup.
Also performing well in defence were
Seb Jales, Mark Greenaway and Paul Moralee. The midfield of Gary
Cross, Michael Humphreys, Ollie Bailey and Andy Norman got better as the game
wore on. Danny Manaton, Robin Craig and Kyle Newman all arrived in the
late second half to reignite Twyford's challenge with their fresh legs.
Danny Lewis had an easy time in goal earlier in the tournament but showed his
worth in the last three games especially the final where he made some
outstanding saves to keep Twyford in the final. The final was a
fantastic team performance with each player putting in 110% performance.
After this Twyford travelled to Rabac
in Croatia for a well earned holiday but still managed to win a friendly
against Rasa 6 - 0, goal scorers for Twyford were Callum Old (3), Jordan
Charran, Andy Norman and Kyle Newman. Lewis Scarf also appeared in the
friendly with an excellent performance.
On the way home Twyford stayed in
Munich and Leverkusen and had tours of the brand new Allianz Arena and the Bay
Arena (Leverkusen). Everybody was in agreement that the trip had been a
huge success and the Allianz Arena was the best ground any of them had visited.
Congratulations to the boys on their excellent behaviour which the management
were congratulated on by other guests in the hotels.
